2024 Volkswagen Taos
The Taos is the smallest crossover in Volkswagen’s lineup, fitting snugly into the subcompact crossover class. It’s a great choice if you do most of your driving in the city but still want the advantages of a spacious cargo area and comfortable seating for up to five people. Measuring 14.7 feet in length, it’s around 10 inches shorter than the Tiguan, the closest crossover to the Taos in size in the Volkswagen lineup. It has a starting price of around $25,000, making it a very affordable choice.

A 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine powers the Taos, producing a solid 158 horsepower. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) models get an eight-speed automatic transmission, while all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions have a seven-speed transmission. Both powertrains return impressive fuel economy. The FWD Taos achieves 36 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg on city roads, while AWD versions manage 32 and 25 mpg respectively.

You can upgrade to a premium nine-speaker stereo, an 8-inch touch screen, and a navigation system. Other options include wireless device charging and HD radio. Standard safety features are forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.

The standard Tiguan has two rows of seats, offering a capacity of five passengers. Unlike most compact SUVs, it has the option to add a third row of seats, which boosts capacity to seven, or six if you choose second-row captain’s chairs. With the third row in place, you’ll have 12 cubic feet of storage space at the rear, which is about the same as the trunk in a midsize sedan. Two-row Tiguans have much more cargo space, with over 37 cubic feet at the rear and more than 70 cubic feet if you fold the second row flat.

The Volkswagen Atlas is a three-row SUV with seating up to seven people. It’s the perfect vehicle to choose if you have a large family or require plenty of space to carry bulky cargo items. The Atlas Cross Sport makes a few style adjustments to the roof, which gets a sloping rear. It also loses the third row of seats, but still boasts an ample cargo area in the back. For 2024, both SUVs have received a style makeover, including a new front fascia, headlights, and taillights. The Atlas starts at around $38,000.

Volkswagen has upgraded the four-cylinder turbocharged engine ahead of the 2024 model release. It gains 34 horsepower for a maximum output of 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. This gives the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport the perfect powertrain for rapid acceleration on the highway. It’s also a good setup for towing. Both configurations have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, which is plenty for a decent-sized camper or a large trailer.

Inside the cabin, the Atlas has a third row large enough to accommodate adult passengers. With a second-row bench seat, it can hold seven people, while capacity drops to six with second-row captain’s chairs. You’ll find over 20 cubic feet of storage behind the third row, enough to haul a load of groceries back home. If you opt for the two-row Cross Sport, there are over 40 cubic feet of space at the rear. That should suffice for a weekend camping trip out of town.
As for infotainment, you’ll get a massive 12-inch infotainment screen, a six-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
