Trims

For the 2021 model year, Volkswagen eliminated the SEL trim, so now you can choose among three trim options: S, SE, and R-Line. The SEL trim was the Passat’s top-of-the-line trim and came with leather upholstery, so now the R-Line takes over that spot.

Interior Amenities

Volkswagen vehicles are known for their luxury without the high price tag, and the Passat continues this tradition with a premium interior. The Passat underwent an interior redesign the previous year, so little has changed for the 2021 models.

Seat comfort remains high, and the driver’s seat is height-adjustable so even shorter drivers can get properly situated behind the wheel. Outward visibility is excellent thanks to an open cabin and thin door pillars. Headroom and legroom are plentiful in both rows of seats, with front-row travelers getting about 38 inches of headroom compared to 37 in the back. Legroom up front is approximately 42 inches with 39 inches in the back seat.

The base trim includes cloth upholstery and a new leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Moving up to the next trim gives you synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control. To help you deal with those frigid Illinois winters, use the SE’s heated front seats and remote start.

Compared to other vehicles in its class, the Passat interior has a large trunk at almost 16 cubic feet. Use the 60/40-split-folding rear seats to help you easily load bulky items into this space.

2021 Volkswagen Passat - Exterior Silver

Exterior

On the outgoing Passat, Volkswagen updated the exterior, giving it sharper lines, a more aggressive grille, and a roofline that you might find on a coupe and not a sedan. The vehicle comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the SE gains 18-inch alloy ones. While Illinois winters can be rough, enjoy the sunshine and warmer temperatures with the SE’s sunroof. The R-Line trim adds unique front and rear fascias, special badging, black window surrounds, a rear spoiler, and large 19-inch alloy wheels.

If you compare the Passat to the Jetta, which is Volkswagen’s compact car, the Passat is 8.5 inches longer coming in at 193.6 inches with a 110.4-inch wheelbase. The Jetta clocks in at 185.1 inches in length and has a 105.7-inch wheelbase. These numbers mean that the Passat gains greater stability in corners and feels safer to drive.

Power & Performance

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is the only engine choice, but you won’t be disappointed. This engine makes 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, giving it enough power to drive around town or commute on the highway. It’s also mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. While driving, you experience a high-class ride along with predictable handling, showing that the Passat is comfortable and capable. Its steering is receptive and accurate, even when navigating through traffic or around corners.

Technology Features

One of the highlights of the 2021 Passat involves its high-tech features. The user-friendly MIB infotainment system has a responsive 6.3-inch touch-screen display as well as physical controls for climate and audio functions. It also comes standard with smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a three-month subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, and several USB ports.

The top trim adds navigation, a larger 8.0-inch display, a nine-speaker Fender premium audio system, and a six-month subscription to Volkswagen’s Car-Net services. Car-Net allows you to connect your car to your smartphone so you can view maps, messages, music, and other apps on your vehicle’s dashboard. It also helps to keep you safe on the road with an automatic crash response system that can dial an emergency response specialist if the system detects that you’ve been involved in an accident. You can program it to monitor secondary drivers and set curfew alerts and speed parameters.

Safety

Every 2021 Passat trim comes standard with several key safety features, some of which include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front-traffic assist with pedestrian monitoring. Also, Volkswagen equipped all trims with adaptive cruise control for the 2021 model year.

The SE trim adds lane-keep assist and rain-sensing windshield wipers. On the R-Line trim, you’ll find adaptive headlights that swivel and point to corners. This top-of-the-line trim also includes Light Assist, which uses a camera in the windshield to analyze the traffic ahead and automatically shut off the high-beam headlights if necessary. Because of these impressive safety features, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Passat with its highest rating in all six of its crash tests.
