The Volkswagen Atlas is a midsized SUV geared for both adventure and around-the-town family travel. It is available in four categories of trim: the Atlas S, the Atlas SE, the Atlas SEL, and the Atlas SEL Premium. There are several styles within each of the categories that account for some of the key differences.

All trim levels are available in either all-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive; they come with either a 2.0 liter or 3.6 liter engine, with either four cylinders or six cylinders. The Atlas trims will vary in their EPA estimated gas-tank efficiency, but generally hover around 19 mpg combined.

Seating

The Volkswagen Atlas offers comfortable seating for seven people. The seats consist of V-Tex leatherette surfaces, offering luxurious comfort. Spread out as much as you like, as the Atlas is equipped with spacious second- and third-row seating, enabling your passengers to ride in a roomy and stylish interior.

If you’re lucky enough to get a seat up front, and it’s winter, you will appreciate the heated front seats, which will get you through all those cold and lonely days. Drivers of the top-of-the-line Atlas SEL Premium will be able to extend the seat-warming courtesy to passengers through their own heated outboard seats.

Drivers can make adjustments as needed to fit their style; depending on the trim, you will have six-, eight-, or 10-way power-adjustable seats, along with power-adjustable lumbar support for shouldering the driving duties. The seat has built-in intelligence, so you can program it to remember your favorite configurations. Passenger seats can be adjusted in multiple ways, including by height.

Cabin

The Atlas’ cabin offers maximum flexibility for you and your family. In addition to the front bucket seats for both passenger and driver, the Atlas’ second row of seating offers a 60/40 split, while the third row breaks down halfway. These fold-down dimensions allow you to configure the car however you need it, so that you can bring along the gear you need and the people you love. Head restraints are fully adjustable. More advanced trim packages include a panoramic sunroof.

The maximum cargo volume if all seats are down is 96.8 cubic feet, among the largest in the midsized SUV class. Here’s the breakdown: the Atlas offers 20.6 cubic feet of space behind its third-row seats, which flexes to 55.5 cubic feet with the second row of seats folded down.

Depending on the trim, the Atlas offers carpeted floors and carpet-floor trim, along with two seatback storage pockets. For items that need to be completely out of sight, there is concealed storage in the rear cargo area. Interior lighting is more than bright enough, and includes front and rear map lights, fade-to-off interior lighting, and a day/night auto-dimming rearview mirror. To complete the cabin’s interior comfort, the Atlas gives you the maximum capability to provide comfort for all passengers with its three-zone automatic climate control.

Technology

No discussion of a car’s interior is complete without looking at the available technology features. The Atlas, across its various trims, has plenty of the latest electronic wizardry to keep you safe, informed, and entertained. The Atlas provides a driver-information center that breaks the mold: Instead of a traditional instrument panel, you will see a customizable digital display. You can program it to show you your route, speed, range, elevation, and other relevant data. Volkswagen calls it your “digital cockpit.”

You will also make use of a digital entertainment touch-screen display in the middle console of the car. The base model, the Atlas S, starts with a 6.5-inch diagonal screen; further on in the trim line, the display screen offered is an 8-inch diagonal. Volkswagen allows for technology that integrates with your smartphone through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto so you can listen to your favorite music, news, or podcasts.

Safety

The Atlas is integrated with Volkswagen’s suite of safety tools, known as IQ.Drive. This includes features such as lane assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, rear traffic alert, and emergency assist. These safety features watch what’s going on outside to keep you safe inside.

The Atlas also includes a rearview camera system to allow you to see what’s behind you when you are backing up. The Atlas is also, as Volkswagen puts it, “intelligent by design.” This means that, in the event of a collision in which the air bags are deployed, the car will turn off the fuel pump, unlock the doors, and activate the hazard lights, providing an emergency reaction when you might not be able to.
