At Volkswagen of Marion, we eagerly await the arrival of the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan, a compact SUV that delivers big performance. The 2023 Tiguan continues to impress with its size, versatility, and curb appeal in a crowded segment vying for your attention.

We haven’t seen a complete list of features and pricing yet, but we had our experts talk with Volkswagen insiders to get you a sneak peek at the new model. Here’s what they found out.

Trim Levels and Pricing

The new Tiguan comes in four trim levels, and we expect a similar format for 2023. You’ll see the two lower trims, S and SE, and then some version of the top-tier SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line models. The trim names might vary slightly, but the offerings should remain consistent.

The base model S in a front-wheel-drive platform should price out around the same as the 2022 model’s $26,490 MSRP. As you move up the trims, you’ll see additional features. The top-tier SEL R-Line comes with all-wheel drive and all the top-of-the-line comfort and convenience features you’d expect. The highest-spec 2023 Tiguan model will likely come with a price tag close to last year’s $37,320 MSRP. The SE and SE R-Line models will fall somewhere between those two in price depending on the different option packages you choose.

Exterior Style

Volkswagen refreshed the Tiguan’s exterior for the 2022 model year, so we don’t expect too much in the way of style improvements. That said, the curb appeal of Tiguan stands out in this competitive market. LED headlights frame the wider, bolder front grille. Chiseled lines and soft curves give the Tiguan an athletic profile as it rolls on alloy wheels ranging between 17 and 20 inches.

Powered and heated outside mirrors are a feature on all trims and have a memory function on the SEL R-Line. The panoramic power sunroof comes standard on the top two models. Each trim comes with black or silver roof rails, but only the SEL R-Line features the hands-free power liftgate. Both R-Line models have trim-exclusive grilles, badging, intakes, side sills, bumpers, exterior trim, and body-color lower cladding.

Interior Comfort and Convenience

Slipping inside the cabin, you immediately notice up to three rows that seat up to seven people. Premium cloth upholstery comes in the lower trims, while the SE R-Line Black upgrades you to the durable V-Tex leatherette material. The SEL R-Line has genuine leather seats. Every model features a leather-wrapped shift knob and heated seats. The two R-Line trims have a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with all your cruise and infotainment controls.

The base model comes with an 8-inch digital gauge cluster with an option for a 10.25-inch cluster. Every trim comes standard with a 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen with the option for an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology come preloaded on the new Tiguan, enabling hands-free operations. Wireless charging and the Volkswagen Car-Net Hotspot come standard on the top two trims. In addition, you can add the Fender premium audio system to amplify your favorite music.

The Tiguan offers two- and three-row configurations, which affect the cargo capacity. The two-row models have 37.6 cubic feet of space behind the back seat and 73.4 cubic feet with the seat folded flat. In the three-row version, you have 12 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third row and 65.3 cubic feet of space behind the front seats.

Driver-Assist Systems

Every Tiguan comes with a suite of driver-assist technologies designed to elevate your driving experience, whether you stay home in Marion or commute to St. Louis. The suite includes adaptive cruise control (ACC), which helps reduce driver fatigue by keeping your Tiguan at a preset speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. When traffic slows, the system automatically slows your Tiguan down. The ACC brings your Tiguan back to your presets when the way forward clears.

Another critical system, front assist, alerts you to objects in your path and can add brake support if necessary. The blind-spot monitor sends visual and audio cues when vehicles enter your blind spots, letting you change lanes confidently. The rear cross-traffic alert system uses similar tech to alert you to vehicles approaching from either side while in reverse, helping you back up safely in busy parking lots.

Volkswagen’s lane-assist technology uses sensors to track your Tiguan when traveling within marked lanes. The system alerts you and provides gentle steering correction to return you to your lane if you drift across the road markers without activating your turn signal. In addition, an emergency assist system detects possible collisions and can bring your vehicle to a controlled stop, even if you can’t.

Other convenient features include the light assist system that adjusts your headlight angle to see around corners and automatically toggles between high and low beams depending on oncoming traffic or a vehicle ahead. An area view camera system provides you with a bird’s-eye view of your Tiguan. This system works alongside the park distance control with a maneuver braking system to help you park.

Performance

Under the hood, you’ll find the same powertrain from the previous generation Tiguan. Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 16 valve pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Volkswagen’s transmission has a Tiptronic mode that enables you to shift manually for a more connected driving experience. This powertrain puts out 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. As a result, we expect the 2023 Tiguan to have the same 1,500-lb towing capacity as the previous generation.

Tiguans equipped with all-wheel drive offer four selectable driving modes that tune your throttle, steering, and suspension to the road conditions. You can stay in On-Road Mode for everyday driving or select Off-Road Mode when you leave the pavement behind. Opting for Snow Mode enables earlier up-shifting, which keeps your engine in a lower rpm range. As a result, power doesn’t travel to the wheels as quickly, giving you better traction. You even have an Off-Road Custom Mode that lets you choose your preferred settings.
