Meet the future of Volkswagen: Electric Concept Vehicles

Current Volkswagen Hybrid Vehicles

Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen’s only hybrid car is a version of the Jetta. The four-door Jetta sedan has been around for several years now, making it one of the earlier hybrid models on the market. The most recent model of the Jetta Hybrid was released in 2016 but it still contains many of the modern features you’d expect in newer vehicles. In this model, you’ll find a hybrid engine that can produce 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It also has a combined 44 mpg rating, allowing you to go further on a single tank of gas, thanks to it being a hybrid. You can also get features like keyless ignition, a rearview camera, and a leather steering wheel on premium trims for added luxury. If you’re looking for a reliable hybrid sedan, this is a great option to consider.

What’s in Store for the Future?

While Volkswagen did not focus on producing many hybrid models within the United States, it is focused on producing pure electrical vehicles in the coming years. Some of them are even available for preorder already, making it the perfect time to start thinking about your next vehicle. Eventually, you’ll be able to test drive:

The Volkswagen ID.3

First up, we have the ID.3. The ID.3 is a five-door hatchback that was first revealed back in 2016. It’s the first all-electric vehicle revealed by Volkswagen. While some details are yet to be finalized, it’s expected that the top-line version of this model will be able to go 341 miles on a single charge, which is more than double that of the Tesla. Unfortunately, the ID.3 is not currently set for release in the United States. Luckily, there are similar models from Volkswagen that are going to be available here.

The Volkswagen ID.4

The ID.4 is a crossover SUV that’s fairly similar to the ID.3. One look at this vehicle and you’ll likely be in love, due to its sleek lines and available color options. Inside the ID.4, you’ll find an 82-kilowatt-hour battery and a single electric motor that can produce 201 horsepower, which is more than enough to keep up with its closest competitors. In addition, the base model of the ID.4 is expected to get an estimated 97 mpg equivalent combined highway and city, which is right around the same distances as other models. On a full charge, you should be able to go about 250 miles without having to charge again. The Volkswagen ID.5

The ID.5 offers further driving distance on a single charge along with coupe-like looks. It’s very similar to the ID.4 in its appearance, except for a different roofline. With its more aerodynamic roof, you can expect slightly better performance from the ID.5 in exchange for a little less space inside. Inside, you can expect some of the latest technology found in other models, such as a 12-inch infotainment system and voice commands. Volkswagen announced plans to start selling the ID.5 in the fourth quarter of 2021, so be on the lookout for this all-electric vehicle sometime between October and December of this year.

Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion

The ID Space Vizzion is a large wagon that will be able to go an estimated distance of 300 miles on its 82-kWH battery pack. It’ll also have the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds, making it one of the more responsive electric wagons on the market at the time of its release. In addition, there will be two options for the motor, with either a single rear motor that can generate 275 horsepower or the addition of a second front motor for improved performance. Expect the Space Vizzion to start selling sometime in 2022.

Volkswagen ID Buzz

Finally, there’s the ID Buzz, which is set to release in 2023. This is the most unique of the Volkswagen models, as this model resembles the classic Volkswagen van from the ’60s and ’70s. In this van, you’ll have plenty of space for passengers and your cargo, making it ideal for long road trips or trips to the beach. The entry-level model will likely be a rear-wheel-drive version like the others on this list that’s capable of producing around 200 horsepower. If you want to combine the feeling of driving around in a classic Volkswagen van with modern features, this will definitely be a vehicle to keep your eye on.
